Over 34 million viewers tuned in this year to watch the 88th Academy Awards hosted by Chris Rock.
The ceremony, which took place on February 28th in Los Angeles, honored the
best films of 2015. Mad Max: Fury Road won the most awards of the evening (6),
followed by The Revenant with 3 wins. Leonardo DiCaprio received his
long-awaited first Academy Award in the lead acting category, and Brie Larson
won the lead actress trophy for her work in Room. Spotlight received the top
honor of the night: Best Picture.
The trophy, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, or nicknamed the
“Oscar,” represents excellence in cinematic achievements and dates
back to 1929. The Oscar statuette is made of gold-plate britannium on a black
metal base and depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword standing on a reel
of film. The reel itself has five spokes that represent the original branches
of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.
Congratulations to the 2016 Oscar winners. We look forward to seeing what
Hollywood has in store for us in 2016!
