Chromatic IP: A New Staple of Luxury

IP Chromatic finish award and watch

Updated 7/17/2025

At Society Awards, we deploy innovations to effect, enhancing our products to create surprise and delight for our customers with timeless style. As a luxury brand, our works are meant to be evergreen through the decades. Innovations must be carefully selected to fit this ethos. Now, a technique that we employed years ago has become a trend with other luxury brands.

What is a Chromatic IP Finish?

We have been using what we term Chromatic IP finishes on select exclusive awards and custom trophies. The Chromatic IP finish technique uses ion plating, a high-quality and durable form of vapor deposition plating, and brings a breathtaking spectrum of colors to life with a mirror reflective finish. This technique applies not only to awards; it is now becoming eminent in the world of luxury.

Chromatic finishes in Haute Fashion

Haute horology uses ion plating in the creation of high-end watches, creating durable yet elegant finishes, demonstrated by LVMH’s Hublot in their Big Band DJ Snake Limited Edition Iridescent Watch released in 2021. Louis Vuitton has also embraced this technique, incorporating iridescent hardware for bags in their 2023-24 Fall Winter Collection, showcasing the versatility and elegance of Chromatic IP finishes.

Modern Art Meets Architecture
in Living Color

Society Awards has not only adopted this technique in our awards, but also in our workspaces. In 2017, we renovated our facility in Grove, OK, adding among other details chromatic panels to the exterior of our building in a sculptural expression. These panels have a finish that transmits or reflects light based on its wavelength, creating a visual of dynamic colors.

This same technique was recently translated to a skyscraper in Brooklyn, NY. Designed by architect Annabelle Selldorf, the exterior of One Domino Square is coated with iridescent, pearl-like, porcelain tiles that reflect the sky, resulting in an ever-changing appearance.
