The Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year award stands as a prestigious recognition presented by the NFL Foundation to high school football coaches who embody integrity, leadership, and excellence; values long upheld by legendary coach Don Shula himself. Each year, this award celebrates the profound impact coaches make in shaping young athletes and fostering strong, resilient communities through football.
Honoring Excellence in High School Football Coaching
Named in honor of Don Shula, the who holds the record for most wins in NFL history, this award was created to reflect the areas Coach Shula excelled at the most during his career: character, integrity, leadership, dedication to the community, commitment to player health and safety and on-field success. Shula was known not only for his victories but for his mentorship and moral leadership, making this award a meaningful tribute to his legacy.
The NFL Foundation invites all 32 NFL clubs to nominate a coach from their local region. Finalists are chosen based on their leadership both on and off the field—emphasizing mentorship, sportsmanship, and community impact. The winning coach receives a $10,000 personal award and an additional $15,000 for their football program, provided by the NFL Foundation. Additionally, the coach receives a striking custom trophy.
A Team Effort in Trophy Creation
This award was originally designed and sculpted by artist Stephanie Borgese. The form of the trophy is made up of three figures on a black metal base. Each figure is expertly cast in metal for superior detailing. The figures are electroplated in black nickel chrome before receiving a thorough hand-polishing. The three figures are mounted atop a high-gloss, black metal base that features the NFL logo.
